Air Handing Unit Inspection (AHU) Specialists

What is an Air Handling Unit Inspection?

An Air Handing Unit (AHU) inspection is a thorough assessment of the condition, compliance, and cleanliness of all of the components of an AHU.

The Importance of Air Handling Unit Inspections

The inspection ensures the AHU is operating efficiently, maintains high indoor air quality, and prevents system failures, significantly extending the overall lifespan of the AHU.

When Air Handling Units Require Inspection

Please bear in mind that it is a legal requirement for all AHUs with an effective rated output of more than 12kW to be inspected regularly, at least every 5 years.

Air system hygiene is controlled by frequent ductwork maintenance which helps to prevent the build-up of dust and bacteria that may provide a focus for microbial growth.

The Benefits of Air Handling Unit Pressure Testing

Verifies Airtightness

The airtightness and integrity of an AHU can be verified by measuring the air leakage of the system. It is essential for the unit to maintain a tight seal for the system to operate optimally. Pressure testing helps identify leaks or defects in the unit’s casing or connections, preventing performance losses.

Energy Efficiency

Minimising air leakage helps to maintain the AHU’s energy efficiency by ensuring that conditioned air is delivered precisely where it is needed, without being lost. Reduced leakage means the fans and other system components do not have to work harder to compensate for lost air, leading to lower energy consumption and operational costs.

Maintains High Air Quality

By ensuring airtightness, pressure testing helps prevent the ingress of unfiltered air, contaminants, or pollutants into the ventilation system, ensuring that only properly filtered and conditioned air is circulated. This is particularly important in settings that demand high indoor air quality, such as hospitals.

Different Types of Air Handling Unit Inspections

Comprehensive Inspections

Our comprehensive inspections involve a thorough assessment of all components in the air handling unit to ensure they are functioning properly and meet operational standards.

Cleaning and Maintenance

We can complete routine cleaning and maintenance to remove dust, debris, and buildup from your machine to prevent hindering airflow and efficiency.

Filter Replacement

Filter replacement involves changing the filters in your AHU to maintain high air quality and prevent any strain on the system from clogged components.

Performance Testing

Performance testing evaluates airflow, temperature control, and overall system output to verify optimal performance.

Diagnostics

Diagnostic checks identify specific issues, faults, or inefficiencies within the AHU. In many cases, catching an issue early can prevent significantly pricy repair costs.

AHU inspections are critical to maintaining a safe and functioning system. Without regular air handling unit or ductwork cleaning, air will pass through the polluted duct carrying bacteria onto or around the supply areas.

Comprehensive duct cleaning and cleanliness surveys also highlight the conditions of the ducting and help to manage any necessary repairs that could go unnoticed.

AHU Coil Cleaning

As part of our AHU inspection and cleaning process, Astroworx also specialise in coil cleaning, this is an area of care within ventilation systems. The coil is in the air flow path on all ventilation system; therefore, it has a direct effect on the rate of air flow, efficiency of heat transfer and indoor air quality.

Blockages in the coil decrease the amount of air passing through the system. Fouled coils lead to increased pressure drop across them. Increased pressure drops increases fan horsepower requirements, which in turn raw more power, increasing current consumption resulting in higher energy costs.

HVAC System Inspection and Cleaning

Air Handling units serve an essential purpose within an HVAC system with all the circulated air passing through the sensitive fins and coils. Over time airborne pollutants can erode and contaminate these highly sensitive units reducing their efficiency and leading to expensive repairs if poorly maintained. As all air from the entire ductwork ventilation system passes through an AHU these ‘pinch points’ in the system collect all debris and particles and can contaminate the entire ventilation system with harmful pollutants and debris.

How We Conduct Air Handling Unit Inspections

Our comprehensive AHU inspections ensure every component of your system is in full working order and operating optimally. In particular, we inspect the following:

  • Filters – to detect clogs or damage;
  • Coils – to remove any debris;
  • Fans and motors – to ensure proper operation and bearing wear;
  • Dampers and controls – to ensure proper functionality; and
  • Ductwork – to check for leaks or damage.

As part of our AHU inspections, we offer as standard a full and comprehensive cleanliness report, a filter, coil, impellor, and belt survey, rust treatments and recommendations, and water ingress testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

AHUs with an effective rated output of over 12kW must be inspected at least once every five years under UK regulations.

Frequent inspections, carried out at least once every year, are recommended to ensure the optimal performance of your AHU and early fault detection.

Reduced airflow, strange noises, increased energy bills, or poor air quality may all signal the need for an inspection.

You’ll receive a full report with recommendations after your inspection. Astroworx can carry out any necessary repairs, maintenance, or component replacements.

The duration of your inspection can vary depending on the unit’s size and complexity, but most inspections can be completed within a few hours.

Inspections assess condition and compliance, while maintenance includes actions like cleaning, repairs, or part replacement. We offer both services.
