What is Ductwork Cleaning and Why is it Important ?

Ductwork cleaning is where Astroworx first ignited its hunger for success, and to this day, it remains a cornerstone of our business. With years of experience across a wide range of industries and sectors, there is little we have not encountered or been involved with since the birth of our company in this ever-changing industry. Whatever challenge arises, we have the expertise to tackle it.

The process of removing dust, debris, mold, and other contaminants from HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems comes in many forms. We utilise both dry cleaning techniques, including our advanced negative pressure air movers with HEPA filtration, and wet cleaning techniques, which involve industry-leading cleaning chemicals. These chemicals provide long-lasting cleanliness while also being eco-friendly, using biodegradable substances that minimise environmental impact.

All of the above can only be made possible when dedicating thousands of hours to the industry in research and experience

This process of cleaning ventilation systems is essential across commercial, industrial, and residential properties, as all building types rely on clean, efficient ventilation systems to maintain indoor air quality, comfort, and safety. Within our most popular source of enquiries – clean ventilation systems within commercial environments (such as offices, hospitals, and retail spaces), help create a healthier space for employees, customers, and visitors by reducing airborne allergens, bacteria, and even unpleasant odors—while also ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.

When Should Duct Cleaning Take Place & How Often?

Although ventilation systems may be out of sight, they should never be out of your mind.

A contaminated HVAC system can be the unseen reason that the occupants of a building may be feeling sick or unwell.

Regulation 5 of the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, as detailed in ACOP 5 (paragraphs 41 and 42), requires that mechanical ventilation systems undergo regular maintenance, including inspection and testing at appropriate intervals.

BS EN 15780 supports this by providing guidance on inspection frequencies based on Cleanliness Quality Classes—Low, Medium, and High—which reflect the type of space served and its occupancy level.

While cleaning frequency depends on contamination levels found during inspection, inspections themselves should be carried out at minimum recommended intervals as outlined in Table 6 of the standard TR19 Air.

These intervals may need to be increased depending on environmental, operational, and human factors both inside and outside the building

5 Signs You Need Air Ventilation Cleaning

Properly maintained ductwork is essential for maintaining indoor air quality and HVAC efficiency. Here are key signs that indicate your ducts may need professional cleaning:

1. Visible Dust or Debris from Vents

If you notice dust or particles being expelled from vents when the HVAC system is running, this is a clear sign of contamination within the ductwork. Normally, air should flow cleanly and invisibly — visible dust signals it’s time for inspection and cleaning.

2. Frequently Clogged Air Filters

While air filters should be replaced regularly, needing to change them every few days may point to a deeper issue. Excessive dust and debris in your ducts can overwhelm filters, reducing air quality and HVAC performance.

3. Persistent Unpleasant Odours

Unidentified, musty, or unpleasant smells may be originating from within your air duct system. If odours become stronger near vents or return air intakes, it’s worth investigating further — mould, decay, or pest activity may be the cause.

4. Mould or Mildew Growth

The presence of mould or mildew in or around your HVAC system is a serious concern. These contaminants can spread through the ductwork, affecting air quality and posing health risks, especially for individuals with allergies or respiratory conditions.

5. Evidence of Insects or Vermin

Signs of rodents or insects — such as droppings, nesting material, or actual sightings — indicate your ducts may be compromised. This can lead to the circulation of harmful microbes and allergens throughout your home, making prompt cleaning essential.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is recommended that your HVAC systems and ducts are cleaned frequently, as dust, grease, and debris can build up quickly. Depending on how often your ducts are used or where they are in your home, for example, in a commercial kitchen, can affect how often they need cleaning. For example, commercial kitchens may need cleaning every 3 to 12 months whilst office ventilation systems may need annual cleanings.

The time it takes to clean air ducts can vary depending on the size of your system, the type of ventilation system, and the condition of your ducts. For example, residential properties may take 2-4 hours whilst commercial spaces can take longer than a full day.

Although getting your ducts professionally cleaned is important, it’s also equally as important to maintain your ducts between cleans. You can do this by:

  • Changing your HVAC filter regularly
  • Dust and vacuum regularly
  • Consider installing an air purification system
  • Use kitchen vents
  • Control humidity in the environment
  • Let fresh air in

You don’t need to leave the house during duct cleaning; however, the process can be quite loud so may want to leave if you have small children or pets.

Fire dampers prevent fire and smoke from spreading through the ductwork, so it’s essential they undergo regular testing to comply with safety regulations.
